Meet Aoife

A passion for accessible outdoor spaces shaped her 14-year career

The Beginning

Aoife's journey into senior outdoor recreation didn't start with a grand plan. It started with a gap she noticed. In 2010, while working as a community coordinator for an active aging initiative in Dún Laoghaire, she realized something obvious but overlooked: older adults wanted to explore Dublin's natural spaces, but they didn't have reliable information about which trails were actually accessible to them. The guidebooks didn't mention where you could rest halfway through. Nobody talked about which paths had proper surfaces or how steep the inclines really were.

That frustration became fuel. She pursued formal study in Environmental Studies at University College Dublin, graduating in 2012, and went on to complete certifications in trail assessment and accessible design standards. Not the kind of thing you do unless you're genuinely invested.

Building Expertise

Over the past 14 years, Aoife's collaborated with Dublin City Council, Dúchas (The Heritage Service), and retirement communities across the Greater Dublin Area. She's walked and assessed nearly every route she documents — not from a desk, but in person, testing them the way retirees actually experience them.

Her work has directly influenced accessibility improvements at Marlay Park and the surrounding forest networks. She doesn't just write about routes. She's mapped them. She's timed them. She's sat on the benches along the way and talked to people who use them. That's where the real details come from — the kind that don't make it into generic trail guides.

Why It Matters

Aoife's seen firsthand how access to good outdoor spaces transforms people's health and wellbeing. It's not just about the walk itself — though that matters. It's about independence, confidence, and staying connected to the places and communities you love. A well-planned route with good information means retirees can explore with confidence. And that changes things.

Everything she brings to webdesignerssantamonica Ltd carries that same rigor and authenticity. Every article she writes, every route guide she produces — they're informed by 14 years of real work and genuine care about getting it right.
